Husband
is name Chkarn 22 years old. He studied in grade 5. Wife’s
name is Don 23 years old. She studied in grade 4. They got
married 3 years ago and have one daughter to be 1 year old.
Husband is a to build house to earn one house 20,000R. People
went out from this village to Phnom Penh for looking for
job at these. They build house maximize 7 house per year.
Their
parents all side to divided farm to 60 A that one side 30A.
They have one pig and chicken.
They
farm to collect yield every year. On land 60A they used
fertilizer 2 sacks such as while and black fertilizer that
cost the same 48000riel per sack and used natural fertilizer
too. This year they collected 40tav that one tav 12kg. They
didn’t use pesticide. Probably they conduct to build
well in next year. If they farm in dry season, they have
to buy water that has to hire pump machine from own water
and oil the person that hire to pay. To hire 1 hour to spend
2,000R.
Sometime
if they are not enough money, they will borrow money from
their parent.
They
eat 6 of rice per day including their pig too. They live
on her land of parents in low. the rice that collected to
eat enough for one years. They spend to buy milk for their
child 5000riel per day. This year is difficult to find fish
but he can find for eating to be enough.
About
dry wood to find nearly house. If they need it a lot they
can buy it that 1 m3 equal 12,000R. Sometimes his wife takes
cow dang to make wood. For food husband go fishing. If he
finds a lot, he sells that one kg equal 2,000R. The reason
that buy food to spend 50,000R and they think the month
that they spend a lot of money to transplanting.
Their
health is good, they are never too sick. They used to sick
like cold...etc.
Their
feeling if they compare between present and past, they think
now to be better than past because in the past they couldn’t
farm since 2000 but this year they can farm.
Mr.
Lun

Wife
name Tieng Sour Heim is 57 year-old and husband name Lun
is 61 year-old, both husband and wife have 3 male. The first
son is 17 year-old had studied at grade 2 but now he stopped
because he had to help the family in do farming and the
second and third son are studying at grade 5 and 6. And
when they need to pay for the school fee she will sell chicken
and took money to children to pay for.
She
has 1 hectare of rice field and in do farming she needs
to use chemical of fertilizer 3 and haft of sack cost 175,000R
that she took on credits (original price 37,000R) and pesticide
one bottle cost 16,000R and used the spry to made tree of
rice fast grow cost 5,000R. Her family help together in
do farm and she has 3 cows for plaguing and this year she
can get the yield 30Thang.
Since
two years ago that she cannot get a good yield because of
flood and drought that always happen during villager do
farming. And she said that if she hire labor form villager
in harvest season she will paid in one Kong equal 1Thang
of rice to villager and if collages the rice on the land
she will pay 3Tao. And this year she hired the villager
in harvesting and paid 2Thang of rice.
Every
year the yield that got from do farming is not enough to
support the hold house it’s just can support around
3months in a year because in her family needed to used 10can
a day and other months depend on sell laboring and earning
from other made house. And if in the family cannot earn
money, sometime she had to borrow rice from relative or
neighbor around 1 or 2 Tao. Maybe around 2 months that her
family had to eat porridge because cannot find income.
She
used to borrow money from the moneylender 100,000R to buy
rice or support her house and they take the interest from
20% equal 20,000 a month, and had to borrow continue 1ji
of goal to cured her husband and per month needed to paid
1Houn. If she cannot earn money to payback at the limit
time she will need to sell something in her house as animals.
After that she had to borrow money from the Prasak also
200,000R to bought 2 pigs cost 100,000R and had to pay for
her husband disease and her sick and support the family
also, the interest 4% in a month.
Her
husband had illness along time ago so she had to pay a lot
in very year and it’s always happened body swollen
a few time in a year. And she never took her husband go
to cured at the commune centre but she always asked the
private doctor to check up him and paid 2 inject of medicine
cost 3,500R. She said, she never goes to commune centre
because it’s very farm from her house around 5km and
if she went there maybe didn’t have money to pay to
the doctor. The private doctor she can injection on credit
and not paid the interest also.
Sometime
she/husband and husband/son had to sell labor at BTB over
2 months as harvest worker and can get money maybe 5,000B.
And all this money she must to pay back all she interest
and sometime some capital also. She thought that now she
still on in debts 300,000R.
The
future plan for payback the capital and interest, she will
give the children go to find the job at Phnom Penh as construction
worker and carrying worker or harvest worker also and per
week or month go back home each time. Before she can made
pot plate (it make from small rattan) to sell per day can
earn from it 2,000R but now she is very old maybe cannot
does it continue and especially the small rattan tree around
the village was destroy and if she and villager want to
make it they must to walk very far from their house around
4 or 5 km. In her house have 2 pigs, 2chichen and 3 ducks.
If
compare many year ago and now She thought that is very difficulty
in daily life in her family and she and her husband are
very old, have the disease also and especially before in
do farming in 1 hectare of her rice field she got 60Thang
but now she got only 30Thang because now the soil was destroy
by chemical of fertilizer and natural disaster so most of
villager decide go outside to find other job to do to support
their family. And only her oldest son that always go to
find the job at outside the village.
Mr.

Mr. Neang Sak 45 years old a householder, Mrs. Pee Sao 43
years old a wife. There are 8 people, 6 children there are
4 daughters and 2 sons. Older one in age 22 but youngest
one just 4 months. Now most of them stop to study except
two. The children stop working and came to help parent at
home and field.
The main job is farming and also he has 1½ha from
parent’s inheritance. Normally he got 70tang of yield
and in the bad growing he got 10-20tang of yield but now
he got only 50tang of yield in the good growing. “I
‘m every difficult because I have to use fertilisers
a lot to have a good yield. Last year I had borrow fertiliser
about 7 sacks cost 60,000r per one sack, if I ask for discount
it only 45,000r per one sack equal to 170,000 dongs and
the lender take 10% of interest. With high cost input was
made my family food shortage about 3 months it’s start
from September to December. I have borrowed rice from my
relation for eat without interest and will return when I
have. After rice collection session I always come to Phnom
Penh to be a Siclo rider 3 times per session and I got around
50,000r. My wife try to feed pigs but always die and chicken
all got sick, now I have only 4 cows. In past 2 years my
children had disease as skinny and deathly pale, so I have
to sell 2 cows for caring my children and then I had borrowed
from someone about 500,000r more to care my disease as itchy.
Now I still owe them 300,000r only without interest. My
family life was very difficult before but now is better
because I can grow some vegetables feed some animals and
grows dry session rice, says Mr. Seang Sak.
Now he want to feed more animals because it easer to sell
but the problem is hard to care and protect from disease.

Chan Peach

Mrs.
Chan Peach 38 years old, Suppurated when her husband find
a new wife in Phnom Penh, she has 4 persons in her hand
there are 1 son and 3 daughters, the older one is 15 years
old had never study now he’s a construction worker
in Phnom Penh, the middle is 9 years old study in class
3, and last one is 6 years old study in class 1.
Mrs. Peach has 20x20m of homeland and a small poor house;
she has 50A of field include 20A in pawned 5 years ago.
She pawns it for money to care her and her children disease
(she had gaseous illness that causes pain).
Her main income is from yield and animal as ducks and pig
but it usually die one by one, example one of her pig were
died and she loose 100,000r.
She always get money form her son’s salary about 50,000r
every month and her son everyday fill stomach with someone.
To grow rice she has to use chemical fertiliser per year.
She buys it in credit cost 35,000r per 1 sack. This year
she gets only 450 kg of yield, now she starts to buy rice
from someone to eat 1 sack a time. Her rice field doesn’t
give her a good yield yet, because she doesn’t put
a lot of fertiliser and also not enough money to rent someone
to pump water to use.
Daily expanse is 2 kg of rice and 1,000r for food sometime
kids are going to catch some fish to cook but now fish were
nearly to run out of village. While her children and she
got sick they always buy some medicine from small medicine
shop or physician’s house and also she usually had
gaseous illness that causes pain. When she has not enough
money to buy rice she has to borrow that 1tao interest is
2,000r per 10 or 20 days.
Nowadays she have a debt with PRASAK 200,000r in 8 months
of period and she feel afraid that if she couldn’t
find money to payback them at the end of period they’ll
take her properties. She borrows money from PRASAK a lot
of times ago and the debt still not finish, because the
money that she repays ware borrowed from someone else with
10% of interest. “To borrow from NGO the interest
is lower than moneylender but with NGO we could not ask
to delay”, says Mrs. Pheach. And she said now her
family life goes poor day by day because the result of rice
growing were not good, not enough farm’s supplies,
and no animal labour. 2-3 past years when her husband came
he always drunk. She decide to not marry a husband more
even if she poor. Until now she has nothing to hope to help
her yet.
“This
word is nothing to hope for her”, says Mrs. Pheach.
