Labour Day, May
1st Celebrations at WAC
On
May 1, over 900 Garment and Sex Workers came to WAC to celebrate
and publicise the issues and problems in their lives. Key social
and economic issues discussed through role plays, songs, poetry
and other mediums included:
-
Discrimination,
- The
role of solidarity in a union,
- Economic
pressures,
- Family
struggles and dependency,
- Health
and education,
- Violence,
- HIV/AIDS.
The
Minister of Women's and Veterans Affairs, Her Excellency Mu Sochua
was also present and provided encouragement and support to the
workers in their struggle for acceptance and for their rights
to be upheld.
